Program Distinctives

The School of Education views teaching as a service-oriented profession and one of the most important professions in our society today. It is demanding but rewarding. Teachers must be able to structure learning experiences in an environment that fosters the development of the whole person. Some distinctive features of our program include the following:

Two-degrees, Two certificates

The program of Teacher Education at PBU is a program leading to two degrees: B.S. in Education and a B.S. in Bible. All five-year double-degree programs require a minimum of 150 semester hours.

Public certification and Private certification

The programs provide thorough preparation for teaching in public, Christian, other private, and international schools. You will earn a Pennsylvania Instructional I (public school) and ACSI (Association of Christian Schools International) Standard Certificate.

TeachingField Experiences

The field experiences consist of a set of guided observation and teaching experiences under the direction of qualified cooperating teachers in approved schools. The first experience is Field Observation, which consists of 10 hours of classroom observing and assisting the teacher. Next is participation in partnership programs with local public and private schools to work with at-risk and special needs students in the regular classroom or in after-school tutoring programs. This is followed by a full semester working in an inclusion classroom. Practicum, is a short-term field experience of three weeks of observation and teaching in the month of May. Student Teaching I and II (13 weeks) is the final culmination of the teacher education program. It is a full time teaching experience leading to increased responsibility and eventually the full assumption of classroom responsibilities.

Accreditation

PBU is the most highly accredited university of its kind in the nation. The University is accredited by the Middle States Association (MSA), by the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI), by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), and is approved by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to grant public school teacher certification.

Character Development

Character development is at the heart of PBU education across all University schools and is of utmost importance in the field of education.

Alpha Chi Epsilon

The membership of Alpha Chi Epsilon is comprised of all students in the School of Education Undergraduate Division. Club activities provide fellowship and programs geared to the common interest of those in teacher education. Socials are planned for each semester. Special professional programs are planned by the club to address current issues in education.
