Acceptance Policies

Requirements for admission to and completion of a teacher education certification program include the following:

Admission to a certification program

Admission to a teacher education program is a two-step process involving declaration of the student's intent to become a member of the School of Education followed by application for a specific program of certification.

  1. Membership in the School of Education- At the time of admission or early in their PBU studies, students declare their intent to enter a teacher education program. They must meet School of Education requirements for this declaration. SAT scores, high school or previous college GPA, and other measures (if necessary) are used to determine qualifications for teacher education. All students who qualify and who declare their professional choice to be in Teacher Education, are automatically enrolled in the School of Education.

Qualifying requirements are set by the University Admissions Office and the School of Education. Declaration of intent to prepare to be a teacher may be done before, during or after the freshman year. Obviously, the sooner one knows his/her goals, the more exposure he/she will have to a particular professional area. Although all students declaring and qualifying for enrollment in the School of Education are members of the School, not all are officially in a program of certification. This latter status is a separate process explained below, occurring after the student has completed a minimum of 48 semester credit hours.
  2. Application for a Specific Teacher Education Program- An official application for admission into a program and candidate status for certification may be completed by the end of the third semester (48+ semester credits are required). The only exception will be transfer students who must satisfy teacher education admission requirements as soon as possible. The School of Education reserves the right to deny enrollment in education courses to a student who is not officially in a program of certification by the beginning of his/her junior year. Therefore, a student should plan to meet all requirements and apply no later than the end of the sophomore year.

Application forms may be obtained from the Educational Associate in the School of Education and may be submitted at any time after the completion of the requirements, or by permission of the Dean of the School of Education (in the case of transfer students or post-baccalaureate students). A PBU student may be in the School of Education for several semesters before he or she is accepted officially into a specific program.
