What will the training prepare
me to do?
The PBU Institute for TESOL Education provides a foundation for teaching English as a second or foreign language in a variety of venues, including public and private K-12 schools, community and church–based programs for immigrants and refugees, and missions-related overseas teaching.
PBU offers a two-track program, one for pre-service or in-service school teachers, and another for those who desire to teach in venues other than schools. The TESOL courses can be taken for either undergraduate or graduate credit. PBU will award an Institute for TESOL Education TESOL Certificate to students who complete the program requirements in either track.
PBU TESOL Track 1
Track 1: PA Program Specialist-ESL Certification K-12 Teacher Education Track: Add-on to any N-3, K-6, 7-12 or K-12 Certification (13 credit hours)
The PBU Institute for TESOL Education program provides the theoretical base and practical classroom methodology needed to effectively teach ESL in a K-12 setting. The program is best described as a “concentration” in TESOL. It is equivalent to a minor, and for teacher education majors and in-service teachers, it leads to an add-on certificate. The program is not a stand alone “certification.”
PBU will award a Letter of ESL Training Completion to students successfully completing this program. For graduates of the school of education and in-service teachers, this letter, in addition to their PA teaching certificate in elementary education or secondary English, will qualify them to teach K-12 ESL in PA public schools. (The hiring school district must apply on behalf of the teacher to PA Department of Education for the Program Specialist-ESL certificate.)

Requirements for in-service teachers:
In-service teachers with no TESOL training or experience:
Post-baccalaureate certification candidates already holding a PA Instructional I or Instructional II certificate, but having no formal training or experience in TESOL, must meet the same course requirements as pre-service teachers.
In-service teachers with some TESOL training or experience:
Post-baccalaureate certification candidates already holding a PA Instructional I or Instructional II certificate and having prior training and/or experience in TESOL may present evidence of their proficiency in TESOL in one of two ways:
(1) Transcript evaluation : A candidate who has formal training (baccalaureate or above) in TESOL may present his/her transcript for evaluation. Catalog descriptions and/or syllabi from the courses may be required in addition to the transcript. A review committee will determine whether the courses adequately cover some or all of the competency requirements.
(2) Portfolio Evaluation : A candidate who does not present sufficient transcript evidence may prepare a portfolio documenting his/her current competency in TESOL, as developed through both training and experience. A review committee will evaluate the teacher's competency in each area of study required in the Institute for TESOL Education program, based on the ESL Training Components listed by the PA Department of Education.
PBU TESOL Track 2
Track 2: Ministry/Community Service Track: TESOL Certificate Only (12-13 credit hours)
The Institute for TESOL Education TESOL Certificate and the training it represents can open doors to service and ministry opportunities in the United States and around the world. There is a growing need for trained English teachers in community programs for immigrants and refugees, in campus outreach and hospitality programs for international students, and in prison ministries. Overseas, trained English teachers are increasingly in demand in international schools, private language schools and missions settings.
