The
music programs at PBU are designed to provide a professional
education for qualified students pursuing careers as church
musicians, school teachers, performers or composers.
Five 5-year music degree programs are offered:
Each of these five-year programs lead
to two degrees: B.Music and B.S. in Bible.
A four-year Church Music program requiring 35 credits of
music is also offered. This program leads to a B.S. in Bible
degree with a minor in music.
Every student enrolled in a music program specializes in
a performing (applied) area: instrument or voice. Those in
the five-year program have two specializations, one of which
must be voice.
Features/Requirements
- Applied Music Study - Due to the spread
of credits over five years, all students begin their applied
study
with half-hour lessons. All programs provide for at least
a one-hour
lesson per week beginning in the third semester.
-
Ensemble Participation - All students in music
programs are required to participate in at least one ensemble (vocal
or instrumental) each semester they are enrolled (except
5th-year Music Education students). Specific ensemble requirements
depend upon the degree program and the applied concentration.
These can be identified on the individual curriculum
sheets for each degree program and concentration.
- Seminars, Studio Classes, Recitals and Concerts
- Music
students are required to attend the Music Major Seminar,
studio classes, master classes, and program meetings, as
well as a prescribed number of recitals and concerts each
semester. Seminars provide discussions of pertinent professional
subjects while studio classes and recitals give opportunity
for students to gain proficiency in performance.
- Internships - Students in the five-year
Church Music program are required to serve as an intern
and direct
a choir
in a local church during their fifth year.
- Student Teaching - Music
Education Students
must meet the student teaching requirements established
by the
School
of Education.
- Recitals - All music students are required
to perform in a general recital each semester. Upperclassmen
must present
a culminating recital as follows:
- Piano Proficiency - All non-keyboard
majors are required to pass a piano proficiency exam in
order
to qualify
for
the B. Mus. degree. An exam must be scheduled at the end of
the 6th semester and repeated each semester until passed.
Facilities
A two-storied music
building houses faculty studios, offices,
classrooms, rehearsal rooms and practice rooms. A music technology
lab includes computers, synthesizers and other electronic
equipment with music education and composition software.
The Lewis Holmes Recital
Hall, equipped with
a Steinway Model B grand piano, provides an intimate
150-seat tiered hall for most student recitals. Manor Hall
serves as a second recital and rehearsal hall and houses
a three-manual Rodgers organ and a grand
piano. The William Chatlos Auditorium, with its large, custom
built organ and two concert grand pianos serves as a larger
concert/recital hall. Two pipe organs, two electronic organs,
and a piano lab are housed in the music building.
In the Summer of 2004, the School of Music & Performing Arts purchased 23 new
upright and grand pianos from world-renowned Steinway and Sons. This
acquisition made PBU one of only two evangelical colleges or universities in the
United States to be designated an "All-Steinway" School. The designation "All Steinway" indicates that approximately 90-95 percent of all pianos
are Steinway instruments.
Specifically, five Steinway grands are located in piano faculty
studios and classrooms in the music building, and eighteen Boston
(Steinway designed) upright pianos will replace pianos in practice rooms,
classrooms and faculty studios, bringing the total number of Steinway and
Boston pianos to more than thirty. As a result of this ready access to the
finest of pianos, our music majors are able to
perfect their skills and express a full range of musical interpretation
and expression.
