Season Review
Fall 2007 Season

Field HockeyThe field hockey team opened the 2007 season with both question marks and eagerness as the team lost four of its top players from a year ago but returned several key components from a core that went 8-12 in 2006. Additionally, the program was excited about the new addition of Grace Hart to the staff who, as an alum of the PBU field hockey program in 2004, returned to her alma mater to take over the head coaching position.

The team had the benefit of six seniors on the squad but non-the-less had several inexperienced players who would be participating in their first year of collegiate field hockey. The Crimson Eagles also struggled with low numbers, as the team competed throughout the season with just 14 players on the roster.

Hit hard with injuries to start the season, the field hockey team struggled through their first several games, going 0-5 to begin the year. Consecutive wins over Goucher College and Arcadia University gave the Crimson Eagles their first two victories of the season, but several key injuries continued to hamper PBU’s success midway through the year.

After going 2-14 through the first sixteen games of the season, PBU finally managed to come together late in the year and finished strong in their last three contests. The Crimson Eagles defeated Cedar Crest College 3-0 and held on for an exciting 1-0 victory over Immaculata College in late October, pulling their record to 4-14.

Facing the number two team in the county in PBU’s final game of the year, the Crimson Eagles battled Lebanon Valley College deep into the contest and managed to contain the high powered offensive of the 18-0 Dutchmen for three-quarters of the contest. Although Lebanon Valley ended up coming out victorious by a count of 6-1, PBU held the undefeated Dutchmen scoreless through the first 28 minutes and were down just 3-1 with 15 minutes remaining.

Finishing the season with a 4-15 record for the year, the field hockey team experienced the typical ups-and-downs of a team struggling with adversity due to injuries. At one point the Crimson Eagles were even forced to take the field a player down during a game against Richard Stockton College simply because the team didn’t have enough athletes that were healthy enough to compete. Despite the major disadvantage, the Crimson Eagles remained persistent in their clash with the Ospreys, battling the full length of the game to a respectable 1-0 loss in the mist of a severe disadvantage.

For the year, seniors Stacey Messick and Juanita Harding led the team in scoring with four goals each. Sophomore Rebecca Gill was second on the squad with three. Senior goalkeeper Katie Aungst ended the season with 111 saves, a .694 save percentage, and a 2.57 goals against average.

The Crimson Eagles will be forced to replace a lot of talent next year as the ending of the 2007 season means that six seniors are moving on. Congratulations to Stacey Messick, Erin Rohrer, Melissa Reider, Juanita Harding, LeeAnn Marchesi, and Katie Aungst for their great careers at PBU!
