2007 Men's Soccer Season Outlook
The Crimson Eagles enter the 2007 season with a solid core of returning veterans from last year’s 20-4 team. The loss of senior defender Eric Rice to injury and junior goalkeeper Mattias van't Hoenderdaal, however, will provide a significant challenge that PBU will need to overcome.
The Crimson Eagles will look to senior strikers Derek Mosely and Dan Schlegel to repeat the balanced scoring punch that saw both players net over 20 goals in 2006. Senior Andy Miller and sophomore Graham Foster should provide excellent direction for a midfield that returns all four starters who teamed last season for 40 goals. The back line will return Jonathan Waszaj and Jake Miller to help form an experienced and steady defensive core.
Head Coach Tom Fink enters his 25th year at the helm of the men’s program but recently experienced a first when his team gained national recognition from D3Kicks.com Division III Men’s Soccer Poll, earning a preseason ranking of number 32 in the country. PBU will have a target on their back as they face several strong non-conference opponents to open up the year, including Rutgers Camden, Widener University, and highly touted Johns Hopkins University.
The Crimson Eagles are hopeful that they can build on last season’s success. The team’s 1-0 loss in last year’s NCCAA Division II championship game will serve as motivation for the upcoming season. Coach Fink hopes to see his team mature quickly and defend their NEAC Conference crown and earn an automatic bid to the Division III national tournament. |
