Campus Safety
Campus safety means
the protection of people and property to maintain a
safe learning environment. Campus safety depends on
everyone. Your attitudes and actions can help protect
you, your belongings, fellow students and the entire
campus.
If a Crime Occurs,
report it immediately to the
Office of Safety and Security at 215.702.4350, or dial
911 and advise Police.
Campus Surveys
The Office of Safety
and Security conducts periodic surveys of the University
property to identify safety and security related problems
in academic facilities, residential facilities, and
surrounding grounds. These surveys are split into various
areas:
Lighting and vegetation- A thorough walk of
the grounds is conducted both in the day and nighttime
to identify problems such as:
- Poor lighting along areas of pedestrian foot traffic
- Poor exterior lighting of buildings including entryways
- Damaged or uneven sidewalks or benches
- Overgrown trees and shrubs that provide possible
hiding spots or obstructed view
- Tree limbs that hang low over walkways
Academic Facilities- A thorough walk through
the facilities is conducted to verify conditions such
as:
- No broken lock mechanisms on doors and windows
- Fire equipment in place and in working order
- Emergency lighting and Exit lighting in good working
order
- No broken glass on windows and doors
- Handrails are secure in stairwell and outer steps
- Proper function of Alarm Monitoring Services
Residential Facilities- A walk through both
Residential Halls and off campus housing is conducted
to verify conditions such as:
- No broken lock mechanisms on doors and windows
- No windows painted shut or glass broken
- Windows on or near doors do not give access to locking
devices from outside
- Smoke detectors present and in working condition
- Fire extinguishers present and in working condition
- Proper function of Alarm Monitoring Services

Computer Security
- Never provide addresses, social security numbers,
or last names in online content chat rooms or forums.
- Always make sure you log off your e-mail account
when you are done and close open windows to reveal
open sessions you may have forgotten.
- Never give your passwords to e-mail accounts, network
accounts or other password-protected services to anyone.
Giving access to e-mail accounts to anyone except
the person it is assigned to is strictly prohibited
by University policy.
- Back up important data to a removable storage media
and save often while you work.
- When using a laptop or notebook computer, never leave it unattended. Utilize a cable locking system to secure it to a desk or chair.

Crime Alert
When appropriate, the Office of Safety and Security
uses crime alerts to notify the campus community of
crimes that pose a threat to the community including
the dissemination via e-mail distribution lists and
the distribution of authorized "Security Alert"
flyers.
Crime Prevention
Theft is the most frequently-reported crime on the
Philadelphia Biblical University Campus and usually accounts
for more than 90 percent of all reported criminal incidents.
The majority of the thefts are of unattended personal
property.
Personal Property
- Secure valuables left in your dorm room or vehicle.
- Lock the door and windows to your room when you
leave, when you are sleeping, or are in the bathroom.
- Engrave all valuable objects with a unique number such as your driver's license number.
- Lock up your bicycle.
- Use a lock on your gym locker
- DO NOT LOAN or give your keys to anyone.
- Do not leave your keys unattended, anywhere.
- Do not leave books, bags, purses, wallets, or any
other possessions unattended even for a moment.
- Keep a written record of valuables, including descriptions
and serial numbers. These are proof that the property
is yours and will aid in the reporting process and
recovery.
- Always report missing or stolen property immediately.

Personal Safety and Security
- Be aware of your surroundings and those people around
you
- Walk in well-lighted areas.
- Avoid walking or jogging alone.
- Avoid working or studying alone at night in computer
labs, Music Building, or isolated areas of campus
buildings.
- Call Security and let them know if you are going
to be working late at night after regular hours or
on weekends.
- Do not prop open locked doors.
- Know the location of Campus Emergency Phones.
- Make use of the campus
escort service while on campus. Call x4350.
Avoid Trouble
- There is always safety in numbers Try to go places
with another person.
- Stay away from isolated areas. Choose high traffic
and well-lit areas. If possible, avoid shortcuts through
alleys or parks.
- Keep your valuables, like backpacks, purses or
bags close to your body.
- Don't carry large quantities of cash and try to
minimize the credit or cash cards you have with you.
Take them only if you must.
- Dress sensibly. High heels and tight clothing make
movement difficult. Do not wear flashy or expensive
jewelry.
If You Are Followed...
- Cross the street or change
direction.
- Look back often so the person
knows you are aware of them and can't be taken by
surprise.
- Go to areas where there are
people.
- Try to notice and remember as
much as possible about the person so you can provide
a good description to Campus Officers or law enforcement
officers.
Reporting a Crime
The Office of Safety and Security
is maintained 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All
criminal incidents should be reported to the Office
of Safety and Security for response and documentation.
Incidents known in common parlance as Part I of crimes
that are identified to the Office of Safety and Security
are reported to the proper police department to ensure
that all agencies charged with providing services are
aware of these incidents. The relationship and exchange
of information with township, state and federal authorities
is extremely important.
To report a criminal incident, dial x4350 from a campus
telephone, or from one of the emergency telephones located
on the front of Stillman Dorm, Memorial Dorm or in the
upper parking lots. If
you are off campus, dial 215.702.4350. You can also
report a criminal incident in person at the Office of
Safety and Security.
To report a crime anonymously, you may either telephone
the Office of Safety and Security without disclosing
your name or fill out our online Crime
Tip form.
Philadelphia Biblical University maintains a computerized
database for all reported criminal incidents occurring
on campus and those that occur in the surrounding neighborhood.
This data isthe basis for crime statistics reported
to the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting System, for compliance
with the Crime Awareness and Campus security Act and
the College and University Information Act and for reporting
crime statistics to the Campus Community. Our annual
report also includes data from non-police services,
including victims and witnesses.
The Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act requires
Philadelphia Biblical University to provide information
on its security polices and procedures and specific
statistics for criminal incidents and arrests to students
and employees and to make the information and statistics
available to prospective students and employees upon
request. The Pennsylvania College and University Security
Information Act requires Philadelphia Biblical University
to provide information on its security policies and
procedures to students, employees and applicants and
to provide crime statistics to students and employees
and to make these statistics available to applicants
and prospective employees upon request. This information

The Office of Safety and Security maintains an Incident
Journal, which is a chronological listing of all crimes
reported to the Office of Safety and Security and is
open for public inspection at the Carriage House.

Vehicle Security
- Lock your car and take your keys when you park.
- Roll your windows all the way up.
- Remove valuable property from plain view, including stereo faceplates and cell phone chargers. Place them in the trunk or out of sight.
- Park in well-lighted areas.
- Invest in a car alarm, a kill switch, and/or steering
wheel locking device.
