IJS Student Life

FriendsChristian Conduct

An exemplary Christian walk is encouraged and expected of all students. Since the time involved in a concentrated term of study at IJS is limited, we expect students to spend their free time in acceptable forms of entertainment that honor the Lord. We also recognize that godliness cannot be legislated, so we do not publish a list of “don’ts” for our students apart from the prohibitions clearly stated in Scripture. In no way, however, will indulgence in alcoholic beverages, smoking or drugs be tolerated.

Since IJS students are considered PBU students, all IJS students are under the authority of PBU's Office of Student Life in areas of conduct, dress, and dormitory life. We expect IJS students to comply with PBU’s standards. It is our hope and prayer that students will so dedicate their time to fully serving the Lord that there will be no concern about questionable activities. The Institute reserves the right to exhort and/or ask any student to leave when his or her behavior is deemed unwise or questionable in the light of scriptural principles, as we view them.

Due to the intensive nature of study at IJS, prospective students should come prepared to give their full attention to the program. Fifteen to 20 hours of outside work weekly is the maximum allowed for full-time students (those taking three courses per module). Any exception to this regulation should be discussed with the director prior to acceptance as a student. Students who need to work more than 20 hours per week may extend the academic program over two years so they will not fall under the work restriction. Church attendance twice per week is required.

2 StudentsChapel

Each Friday IJS meets for its own “family” chapel. The purpose of IJS chapel is to stimulate growth, encourage deeper fellowship among the school family, and worship our Lord together. The IJS chapel program is varied, with speakers from outside and inside the school and opportunities for testimony and group prayer. The emphasis is on informality and spontaneity as well as careful presentation of the Word and its application to godly living. Each Monday and Wednesday, IJS students gather with the rest of the PBU student body for a time of praise, prayer and preaching.

Christian Service

To implement learning, every student must be involved in some form of practical Christian service in the surrounding communities. Every effort is made to ascertain a student’s abilities, gifts, and interests so the most fruitful form of service can be pursued. In addition to serving in the many evangelical churches in the area, Friends of Israel staff members are available to guide students in evangelistic outreaches on college campuses, in monthly fellowships, hospital visitation, Bible studies, and in unique opportunities for ministry.
