PASTOR/PEACEMAKER FROM MYANMAR RECEIVES HONORARY DOCTORATE
During its December 15th Commencement Ceremony, the University
awarded Rev. Saboi Jun Lahtaw a Doctor of Sacred Theology degree
for his lifetime contribution to Christian education and leadership
with the Kachin churches of Myanmar. Also acknowledged was Dr. Lahtaw's
role as a peace advocate for his troubled country which has been
under military rule since 1988.
Lahtaw began his ministry as a pastor and soon became General Secretary
for the Kachin Baptist Convention. He was instrumental in the growth
of the Kachin Theological Seminary, the publication of evangelical
materials, the development of teaching seminars for pastors and
in establishing hundreds of Christian preschools.
As an advocate for peace, he negotiated a cease fire between the
Kachin Independent Army and the government. Also, he was a member
of a peace task force appointed by former President Jimmy Carter.
Recently, he established the Shalom Foundation to help maintain
peace in his country.
