Dr. Gordon G. Ceperley, Home With the Lord;
1920-2004
Retired Biblical Studies Professor Dr. Gordon G. Ceperley entered into the presence of the Lord on Thursday, April 15, 2004. A Memorial Service is planned for Saturday, April 24, 2 p.m., in the University’s Chatlos Chapel.
Known for his love and knowledge of the land and people of Israel, “Cep” was affectionately referred to as “Mr Israel.” His leadership of PBU’s Israel Study Program, Exodus Holy Land Tours and scholarship in Biblical archaeology contributed to an official recognition in 1982 from the Consul General of Israel for fostering friendship between Israel and the United States.
Dr. Ceperley became PBU’s first full-time faculty member when he came to Philadelphia School of the Bible in 1949. He remained on the faculty for 46 years. In 1992 he was awarded PBU’s first honorary doctorate degree and in 1996 was named Professor Emeritus.
Throughout the years–along with the late Dr. John Cawood--Dr. Ceperley formulated his dream for a museum-type facility that would bring classroom teachings about the Bible to life.
In 2002 his dream came to fruition when PBU celebrated the opening of its new “Biblical Learning Center,” a 48,000-square foot academic facility featuring a museum, gallery and display areas where students and visitors can explore biblical archaeology, geography, customs, animals, plants, church history and more.
Dr. Ceperley will be greatly missed by PBU, his wife Nancy and his four sons, Tim, Jeff, Jim and Andy.
