PBU Hurricane Katrina Relief Team

It was one of the first questions asked of me by a family that we spent
two days working for to prepare their property to be restored from the
effects of Hurricane Katrina. It was easily one of the most challenging
ministry assignments that I have ever been a part of. Let me give you a
picture of what we did...
This house was sealed shut for 6 weeks after 8' of water had been it in
for weeks. We went in and in a day and a half totally gutted this home.
First all of the large furniture, then the small stuff and yes, even the
most personal of items from wedding albums to family treasures. We ended
our work at this home by taking it to the studs of the home. Nothing else
was left. Mold looked more like sponge paint, leaches bigger than my
hand, snakes and cockroaches that helped us carry out the furniture. You
get the idea...
The mom of the family told me that she came to work on her home every
other day after driving 3 hours and after 30 minutes she would sit down on
her front porch and cry. Her words still echo in my mind, I have no hope
and I have no future. All of our dreams are gone! And with that the door
to the Gospel was opened. We went to share the Love of Christ and through
our work God honored our desire to tell others about the hope that resides
in each of us.
Her final comment to me was simply that her own children would not do what
we were doing for her. She turned to me with a tear in her eye and asked, "What makes a PBU student so unique that they would come to Slidell, LA,
paying their own money to serve us"? We have great students, selfless in
many ways, whose passion for the Lord can and will move mountains.
The PBU team of the 13, led by Billy Dunn, completed gutted 3 homes in
Slidell and started the restoration process in each. They also had time
to minister to the people at Faith Bible Church in Slidell and others they
came into contact. The entire PBU family raised over $10,700 for
Hurricane Katrina Relief.
